Badger State 10k - Race Report

I ran this race for the first time last year and really enjoyed it, so deciding to run it this year was an easy decision.  My focus in 2018 is the marathon distance.  My goal has been the same over the past few years, break 3:00.  It will always be my goal...at least until I accomplish it.  So, in addition to just enjoying a competitive 10k race hosted by a brewery, I would be using this race to get an idea of how my training has been going.  This year, Sarah signed up to run the race with me.  As the race date approached the weather became more and more of an issue.  The forecast was calling for cold temperatures and a wintry mix.  I can and have run in just about every kind of weather, living in Wisconsin.  I've raced in a variety of weather, but never weather like we did at the 2018 Badger State 10k.

Training for This Race

As I just mentioned, I was racing the Badger State 10k as a practice race for my upcoming marathon.  Realistically, I would have preferred the distance to be a half marathon, but this time of year, my choices in race distances are limited to say the least.  Leading up to the race, my training had been going really well.  I've been working hard and running in some pretty shitty weather.  This winter has been tough, its been cold, windy, and just unpredictable.

Knowing how my past few marathon attempts have gone, I have really focused my training on distance.  I've boosted my weekly mileage compared to previous years which in turn, has increased my mileage for my higher intensity runs, such as 800's, tempos, and mile repeats.  With the weather and a change in my work schedule, I've been hitting my mileage goals, but the pace goals have been off but due to weather more times than not...at least that's what I'm telling myself.

Prerace

I notoriously like getting to races as early as possible.  It gives me a chance to relax, find a good parking spot, hit the restrooms, and get a good warm up in.  However, when we woke up, the weather was a major issue.  The Fox Valley was right on the line of snow and rain.  So, my house was getting a light drizzle when we left, with temperatures just over freezing.  But as we made the 20 mile drive north, the rain became harder, and more and more of a slushly, sleety mix and the temperatures continued to drop.  We kept our fingers crossed hoping for a break in the precipitation for the race.  But the closer we got to the race starting the more and more it looked like we were going to get cold and wet.  After getting to the brewery, we took care of our ID checks and got our wristbands to drink after the race.  When we did this there was a steady drizzle of sleet and slush.  The roads were soaked and covered in slush and puddles everywhere.  After hanging out for a little bit, we made our way back to the car to stay warm and kill some time.  Around 8:30 (30 minutes before the race), I sucked it up and decided to get out for some sort of a warm up.  I normally like to get in a good 2 mile warm up, but I ended up only getting in a little over a mile, but it was enough.  The roads were covered in about 1-2" of pure slush and slush was literally falling from the sky.  On top of that it was windy... A perfect day for a race!

Nutrition Plan

An hour before the race, I took my usual Anti-Fatigue Caps, Endurance Aminos, and then took my Fully Charged about 10 minutes before the start of the race.

Miles 0-6.2

By the time the race started, my shoes, socks, feet...well, just about everything was soaked from my warm up.  I was warm though, so that was the one positive.  As you can imagine, the field of participants was significantly depleted due to the weather.  But I can't control who I have to race against.  I can only control how well I race and by scoping out the possible competition at the start line, I didn't recognize anyone from prior races who I thought could possibly challenge me.  But as the race started, I just focused on running my own race and seeing what I could do in the slush.  I started out leading the race right off the bat.  I trudged through the slush and just focused on myself.  As I knocked the miles off, I realized that no one was anywhere around me.  By the time I got to the half way point (mile 3.1), I couldn't see anyone behind me.  I thought to myself, bummer, just because I wouldn't have anyone pushing my ass to run faster, but I continued to run the best race I could knowing that I wanted to see how well my training has been going.  As I got to mile 5, I knew that I had 1 mile left and I would have to seriously implode to not win this race.  I continued to push and just thought that the sooner I finish, the sooner I get to get inside and out of the wet, cold, miserable weather conditions outside.  I ended up finishing in 37:01, 1st overall.

Post Race

As I was saying, I had built a pretty good cushion between the second place runner, turns out I had built a 3+ minute lead over the 6 miles.  The second runner finished in 40:08.  Last year, I finished the race in 37:59 and the weather conditions were damn near perfect.  My 10k PR (from the Bellin 10k in 2017) was 37:33.  So taking that all into consideration, on top of the miserable weather conditions, I am ecstatic with my race time.  Sure, I'd take a sub 37 minute 10k, but I have no doubt that will come later this year whenever the weather decides to act normal.  But, with the race now over, it was time to enjoy the successes.  I stuck around for a bit, while I waiting for Sarah, my dad, and our friend Tina to finish.  As soon as everyone finished we ducked inside the post race tent and grabbed our free beer and sandwich and reminisced about how shitty that race was.

What's On Tap

With the race now in the rear view, I had about a month to focus solely on the marathon.  I am aiming my sights on the Oshkosh Marathon on April 29th.  Since the Badger State 10k, we have had some of the shittiest weather I can ever recall...and that's including typical Wisconsin winter weather.  But it is the middle of April, normally we are just transitioning to our t-shirts and maybe even shorts.  But this past weekend we had nearly 30" of snow dumped on us in the matter of just a couple days.  I am starting to seriously question if the marathon will even happen.  Majority of the marathon is run on a trail system, and now there is 20-30" of snow that needs to melt and dry up in just a mere two weeks.  I would be surprised of the race is cancelled at this point, but I also think its a realistic concern.

Harper Turns 4

This is Harper's first ever annual Birthday Interview!  Its a tradition that I look forward to each year for each kid.  This one is special in a sense that this is Harper's first ever one and she is our youngest.  It just goes to show how old our kids and our family is getting.  Its both exciting and sad all at the same time.  I'm excited to see how Harper continues to grow and become a person of her own.  Its also a little heart wrenching to know that we have no more "little girls" in our house.  Harper refuses to be referred to as a little girl, she is now a big girl and wants so badly to go to school.

January Eagle Hunt

Something I want to try to do more this year is to post more short and simple posts with photos.  This Christmas, Sarah got me a new Canon DSLR, which I love using.  But, along with taking pictures, I want to post some of my favorites.  So, today and yesterday, I went out in search of eagles, as they seem to be super active this time of year.  Below are a few of my shots from my eagle hunt.  I am just beginning to learn how to use the camera and need to get used to adjusting the shutter speed and aperture depending on what I'm shooting and in what light conditions.

Hello Fresh Review

Sarah and I bit.  We have seen and heard enough advertisements and radio commercials for Blue Apron and Hello Fresh and other meal service providers, that we finally decided to give it a try.  After doing extensive research (about 30 minutes of internet searches) on several options available, we decided to go with Hello Fresh.  It ultimately came down between Hello Fresh and Blue Apron.  You can choose between a 2 person plan or a 4 person "family plan."  Obviously I am not in the 2 person boat, so I won't even discuss these options, as I honestly know nothing about them.  With Blue Apron's family plan, you can choose either 2, 3, or 4 meals a week.  For 2 meals a week, it cost roughly $75 per week and that includes shipping costs.  Blue Apron gives you a total of 4 recipes per week to choose from.  With Hello Fresh's family plan, you can choose either 2 or 3 meals a week.  For 2 meals a week it cost roughly $70 per week.  Hello Fresh offers a total of 5 recipes per week to choose from.  As I mentioned before, we chose Hello Fresh.  We chose them because they offer one more meal per week to choose from (4 versus 5), they are slightly cheaper, and they had a better initial starting offer.  Blue Apron offered $30 off your initial order, while Hello Fresh offered $25 off your first order and then a $25 credit off your second order for a total of $50 versus Blue Apron's $30.

So now you know why we chose Hello Fresh, here's why we decided to give this whole, "meals delivered to your door," thing.  First off, I love to cook.  I love making new recipes, I love the challenge of trying new things.  Plus, we used to always schedule out our family meals more than a week out.  And when we could, I would always scour the internet for some new tasty recipes.  Whenever we did this, I would do our grocery shopping and I would buy all the ingredients, come home, store them, cook them, then undoubtedly, throw out the unused portions of the ingredients.  I have no idea how much I would spend on any specific meal, and there is no doubt in my mind that, overall, doing this is cheaper per serving, than Hello Fresh.  But, when you consider the cost of the unused food I was throwing away in the end, it was probably more than $35 per meal.  Plus, when you consider that, and the fact that they take all the work out of meal planning, it was worth a try, especially when you consider how much more busier our lives have gotten over the past couple years, on top of the fact that we not only want, but truly enjoy eating healthy, natural foods and meals.

Now on to the fun stuff...our first order!  The first two meals we chose were Honey Sesame Chicken Tenders and Cherry Balsamic Pork Chops.  We scheduled them to be delivered on Wednesday the 3rd.  We had planned on cooking our first meal that night, but unfortunately, the box didn't arrive until shortly after 7pm.  Now, this wasn't necessarily Hello Fresh's fault, but bummer!  The box was just like any other package ordered from Amazon or Target.  Inside the box was an insulated liner containing two grocery style paper bags containing the ingredients for each meal.  Outside the bags were the meats, which were seated directly on top of a huge reusable, disposable, ice pack.  The ice pack and meats were all still frozen, but it was delivered during a polar vortex and the outdoor temperatures were below zero.  But the package was still on heated truck for who knows how long.  I then tossed our bags and meat into the fridge and we continued eating our replacement meal....frozen pizzas!

The first meal we cooked was the Honey Sesame Chicken Tenders.  Each recipe comes with a giant recipe card with easy to follow directions and pictures.  Delaney helped me cook up this recipe as she loves to cook with me as much as possible.  Plus, I thought it would be a neat way to include the girls with these "special" dinners.  All of the produce was fresh and honestly probably more fresh than if I were to have bought it a few days ago from the local grocery store and just thrown it into the fridge.

My favorite part of cooking a per-prepared meal was the fact that basically everything was premeasured and just needed to be added.  It was basically just like watching a cooking show.  Plus, that means there was no scraps.  I wasn't throwing away the left over scallions, or the leftover ginger.  I literally used everything that was sent.  It was spectacular.

The recipe card for the tenders said that it had a 10 minute prep time and a total time to dinner of 30 minutes.  We started cooking around 5:10pm and were eating dinner before 6:00pm.  I thought that wasn't bad considering I was cooking with a 6 year old and I had to dish up 4 dishes before we actually were eating.

The meal was great!  One of my concerns going into this adventure was the fact that we were receiving a meal reportedly for 4 people, when I have 5 super hungry...yet (somehow) super picky... mouths to feed.  Would there be enough food?  I dished up a total of 4 plates (Sarah was sick tonight and not eating).  I was able to dish up one big plate (for me), and 3 other generous plates of my picky little monsters and still had left over tenders, broccoli, and rice.  It would have easily been enough for all 5 of us.  I think I can comfortably say, that if you bought this plan for a true 4 person family, you would have ample serving sizes and still maybe leftovers.  As far as the flavor, the meal was very good.  All kids love it!  Delaney, who claims to "hate meat" even asked for seconds of the chicken!  It was a success, from beginning to end.  We are looking forward to our next meal on Sunday and look forward to regular family meals with new and varying meals!

Top Photos from 2017

I have really come to look forward to this post as each year comes to a close.  It gives me a chance to go through every single picture that was taken over the past 12 months.  This past year our family was fortunate to travel to some pretty cool places.  We took a family trip to Upper Michigan to see Pictured Rocks National Shoreline and then a couple months later we went out west to South Dakota.  For whatever reason, as I was looking through the past years pictures, it hit me that we are extremely blessed and fortunate to have the opportunities that we do.  I am one lucky guy.  I have an awesome relationship with my wife as we let each other have our freedom all while taking time to enjoy each other's company.  I have three beautiful, unique daughters, who inspire me and bring me joy nearly each and everyday.  And I have a great supporting cast including parents, in-laws, brother, and my brother and sisters-in-law.  Sarah and I also have great friends that we try to spend as much time with as we can.

So without going on and on....here are my top photos from 2017.  All of these photos were taken by me and most (if not all) were on my iPhone 7.  Some of them have been edited, but no filters, or anything like that.  Not all the top photos are not necessarily the most photogenic, but all of them have some meaning to me.  Below the top photos are the honorable mentions from the year.  This year, I narrowed it down to 12 photos.  In order starting at #12....

#13

Back in January we had a short stretch of warm weather which allowed me to get out in shorts.

#12

Although autumn in Wisconsin means winter is not long off, it sure is beautiful.

 #11

This past year, I made a concerted effort to run on more scenic routes, which includes running along the Fox River.

#10

This was my first year going to the Green Bay Botanical Gardens for their Christmas light display, we went early, right as the sun was setting, which set up this shot.

#9

While in South Dakota, we took a day to drive into Wyoming to see Devil's Tower.  It was a lot bigger than I expected.  Native Americans still worship the rock formation and tie bandanas and flowers around the trees.

#8

Our home in Hill City, SD, was right on a 100 mile trail that ran through the mountains.  The scenery made these runs easily my favorite runs ever.

#7

While in Upper Michigan at Pictured Rocks National Shoreline, we did more hiking in three days, then the girls have done in their short time here on earth.  I was proud of them for not complaining (too much).

#6

My father, brother, and I made it back up to Eagle River, WI for the second year in a row for our annual musky fishing trip.  Again, this year it was rainy, even more rainy than last year.  This was the sunrise on our final day.

#5

This was taken along an overlook on a cliff side.  The pure beauty and magnitude of these shorelines is just not captured in photographs.

 #4

Another picture from Pictured Rocks, and probably my favorite.  It reminds me how lucky I am to be a dad.

#3

These two burros were on the rode side along the Wildlife Loop in Custer State Park.  All the other burros would come up to your car to sniff for treats.  But these two stayed side by side.

#2

Although I Bella is my favorite pup, this one is growing on me.  Her gentle demeanor and her strange love of the camera is hard not to love.

#1

This burro fell in love immediately with Delaney and Delaney immediately fell in love with it.  It probably didn't help that she named it Winter.

Honorable Mention
